Circumcision came to Indonesia together with the Mohammedan religion and was originally carried out every year on the Birthday of the prophet, replacing sacrifices. Later it became an ordinary practice.




In spite of the fact that in 1990 Indonesia ratified the Convention on the rights of the child which forbade any forms of circumcision and qualified them «as sexual child abuse», the situation didn’t change.

Most of women (still remembering «as it was with them» – because it is hard to forget such things), mutilate themselves and their daughters voluntarily: "surgeons" and "anesthesiologists" are women as usual. They blindly follow traditions of their ancestors, and very often they have not the least suspicion of consequences for life and health because circumcision causes high children's and female death rate, different problems with health, intimate life and disproportion in sexual structure. Baby girls are exposed to threefold procedure. Their ears are pierced, they are inoculated against tropical illnesses and also clitoris is removed with a penknife and labia minora is cut with scissors.
